12 Top Soft Skills to Accelerate Your Career

Writer: Shaun ConyersShaun Conyers

In the modern professional environment where numerous individuals hold multiple hard skills, mastery of soft skills truly counts. These skills, which boost your ability to navigate personal and professional connections, are crucial in setting you apart from the crowd. Let's delve into the top 12 soft skills you need to accelerate your career:

1. Adaptability:

The world continually evolves, and adjusting and responding swiftly to the ever-changing landscape is critical to survival. Whether it's technological innovations or shifts in business models, those who can adapt quickly will outpace the competition.

2. Deep Focus:

With distractions at every turn, the capacity to maintain keen attention on a single task becomes ever more invaluable. This skill allows you to distinguish yourself from others and achieve superior results in your work. Draw your lines and set up boundaries so people around you in the office or online won’t distract you while in deep focus. Please turn off your notifications, close your office door, and put on headphones so everyone knows you are in Don’t Disturb Me mode.

3. Time Management:

This may seem like a simplistic skill, but it is fundamental for achieving various goals. Effective time management is essential for productive work and life balance. We often think that with more time, we could be more productive. But the truth is that we lack the practice of prioritization and keep tasks on our agenda that should be outsourced, delegated, or ignored. Get rid of a few jobs and save time for the important ones.

4. Curiosity:

Those who ask questions, demonstrate an eagerness to learn, and regularly engage their innate curiosity tend to uncover transformative ideas that drive professional progress. My mentor taught me that the interest in ‘not knowing’ was a strong driving force in his professional career. Staying curious about the things he now knew gave a little thrill and sparkle in his work life.

5. Self-Motivation:

Employers highly value individuals who display initiative and can stay motivated without external stimulation. This trait not only boosts productivity but also facilitates personal growth and success. However, you can find enormous wisdom in self-motivation; in my experience, it's not so easy to endure. And I think it is treated like a skill that keeps us in a never-ending motivated state when that is far from the truth. Motivation comes and goes like most emotions. Being motivated is a complex state of mind and is unique to everyone. But, the skill to be aware of our current state of motivation level and to re-focus on the goal or desire that brings us back to a higher level of motivation is crucial.

6. Communication:

The significance of clear and concise communication cannot be overstated. Effective communicators convey their thoughts efficiently and understand others' viewpoints, fostering smooth collaboration and team success. Easier said than done. An excellent practice to improve written communication is to journal every day or start writing on any topic you are familiar with, which gives you joy.

But you have to stay consistent; for example, I started with a 500-word/day writing challenge and then worked myself up. After a few months, my style, tone, and vocabulary all improved and refined. Regarding your spoken communication, the best thing to do is think of a favorable topic, point your phone to yourself in video recording mode, and start to speak for 5 minutes straight. Use a timer. Rewatch yourself, and take notes. It will be awkward at first, but this is the speed-track of learning about your speaking style. I use this method with most of my clients, and after the first 2-3 shots, they enjoy these challenges.

7. Storytelling:

A relevant and practical skill in almost any career, a proficient storyteller can engage individuals and captivate audiences, facilitating the delivery of ideas, values, and aspirations. Closely related to communication. Never underestimate a good story's effect on colleagues, clients, and peers.

8. Accountability:

Owning up to one's mistakes is a powerful trait. Individuals who demonstrate responsibility and accountability earn respect and create trusting relationships in the workplace.

9. Perceptiveness:

Spotting patterns and trends is crucial across all industries. This ability aids innovative thinking and facilitates better decision-making. Step back to the issue whenever possible and use a holistic approach. This is one of my forte; I see situations and processes in 3D in front of me. They are not always perfect, but they help me visualize patterns, dynamics, and inherent connectedness within situations or interpersonal emotional connections.

10. Resilience:

Life and work can sometimes be challenging, and it's during these trying times that resilience becomes essential. The ability to bounce back and persist in the face of adversity is a crucial catalyst for success.

11. Open-Mindedness:

Embracing new ideas and challenging existing beliefs can yield fresh insights and unparalleled opportunities for growth. This comes in handy when you are on a team that needs to solve an issue or brainstorm new ideas for the future paths of a company. It will require patience, tolerance, and getting rid of professional or personal prejudice.

12. Creativity:

Creative thinking fosters innovation and problem-solving. While you may not have to be the next great inventor, a spark of creativity can be precisely what businesses need.

Standing out in a landscape with technical skills and talents requires more than just competencies and qualifications. It demands an understanding and proficiency in soft skills. Cultivating and harnessing these 12 soft skills will assuredly pave the way for career advancement and success.

Getting better at these skills is a life-long journey and cannot be learned from books. You will need to push your comfort zone, expand from the experiences, and allow time to think about this journey of growth from within.
